This flowchart to success, presented in the form of a mural with hand lettering, questions the rhetoric to progress which Singaporean children are schooled in. Drawing themes from months of conversations, the mural shares Mary’s value system and how she prioritises in self-belief. Mary, on the cusp of teenhood and a product of her cleaner mother’s dedicated parenting, exudes an outstanding drive to do better in life. Yet, her family’s journey with social workers and community support has drummed in her a sobering sense of reality that hard work alone will not get you there.
